Booking lash extensions for the first time can feel exciting and slightly unfamiliar. Which style should you choose? Will the treatment hurt? How should you prepare? And what happens once the lashes begin to shed?
The good news is that you do not need to know all the terminology before you arrive. At The Lash Lab in Sligo, the process begins with consultation so your first set can be designed around your natural lashes, features, lifestyle and the finish you want.
1. Start with a consultation and patch test
All new clients at The Lash Lab receive a complimentary consultation. We assess your natural lashes, discuss your preferences and consider the style, fullness and maintenance that may suit you.
A consultation and patch test must be completed at least 24 hours before your first treatment. Tell us about allergies, sensitivities, medical conditions or previous reactions before your appointment. Lash services cannot be performed where there is an active eye infection or irritation.
2. You do not have to know which lash style to book
Classic, Double Classic, Hybrid, Wet Look, Clover Volume, Volume, Wispy and Mega Volume all create different levels of definition, texture and fullness. If the names feel confusing, focus instead on the result you like: natural, softly full, textured, defined or dramatic.
Inspiration photos can help communicate your preference, but your finished set may be adapted to suit your eye shape and natural lash condition.
3. Prepare your lashes before the appointment
Arrive with clean lashes and brows, free from eye makeup, oils and skincare products around the eye area. Clean lashes provide a better working surface and help support good retention.
Avoid arriving with mascara that needs extensive removal. If you wear contact lenses and are more comfortable removing them during a long appointment, bring what you need to store them safely.
4. What happens during a lash extension appointment?
You will lie comfortably with your eyes closed while the lower lashes are protected. Individual natural lashes are isolated and extensions or fans are applied according to the selected technique and design.
Appointments can take approximately 2–3 hours depending on the service and individual circumstances. You should not feel pulling or pinching during correct application; if anything feels uncomfortable, tell your artist.
5. What will your first set feel like?
Well-applied extensions should feel lightweight rather than heavy on the eyelids. It can take a little time to get used to seeing more definition around the eyes, particularly if you normally wear little eye makeup.
The goal at The Lash Lab is enhancement rather than a one-size-fits-all transformation, so fullness and styling can be adjusted to your comfort level.
6. Your natural lashes will continue to shed
Lash extensions are attached to individual natural lashes, and those natural lashes continue through their normal growth and shedding cycle. This means extensions gradually shed with them. Losing some extensions over time is expected and does not automatically mean there is a retention problem.
7. Aftercare makes a difference
Follow the aftercare advice provided after your appointment. At The Lash Lab, clients are advised to avoid getting lashes wet for the first 24 hours, avoid oil-based products around the eyes, clean lashes regularly with a lash-safe cleanser, avoid rubbing or pulling, brush with a clean spoolie, and avoid eyelash curlers or mascara on the extensions.
Good aftercare supports cleanliness, appearance and retention.
8. Plan for refills
If you want to keep the set looking consistently full, refills are typically recommended every 2–3 weeks. Your natural lash cycle, lifestyle and aftercare affect how quickly the set changes.
At The Lash Lab, a refill is applicable when at least 50% of the extensions remain. If fewer remain or more than three weeks have passed, a full set may be required.
9. Do not pick or pull at your extensions
If you decide you no longer want your extensions, professional removal is preferable to pulling them off. Picking can place unnecessary stress on the natural lashes.
10. Your first set can evolve
Your first appointment is not a permanent style decision. Once you have lived with your lashes, you may decide you want slightly more texture, less length, a different curl or more fullness at your next suitable appointment. Bespoke lash styling can evolve as we learn what you enjoy.
