Choosing lash extensions is about more than deciding between Classic, Hybrid or Volume. The same style can look completely different from one person to another because eye shape, natural lash direction, lid space, facial proportions and personal preference all influence the finished result.
At The Lash Lab in Sligo, lash styling begins with the person rather than a fixed map. During consultation, Apple considers your natural lashes and the effect you would like to create, then adjusts length, curl, fullness and placement to create a balanced result that feels like you.

Why eye shape matters when choosing lash extensions
Lash extensions can visually emphasise, soften or rebalance different features. Where the longest lashes are placed, how strongly the curl lifts and how much density is added can change the way the eye is framed.
That does not mean every almond eye needs one map or every hooded eye needs another. Eye shape is a useful starting point, not a rule. Two people with similar eye shapes can have very different natural lash growth, lid structure and preferences.
Lash styles for almond eyes
Almond eyes are often versatile because the visible iris is naturally framed by a tapered inner and outer corner. Depending on the desired effect, a softly graduated map can enhance the natural shape, while a more centred design can create a rounder, more open appearance.
Classic lashes can give elegant definition; Hybrid or Volume can add softness and depth; and Wispy styling can introduce texture without losing the eye’s natural balance.
Lash styles for round eyes
With round eyes, the goal is often to create balance without making the eye appear overly circular. A carefully elongated design can draw attention outward, while excessive length directly over the centre may make the eye look rounder.
The final choice still depends on natural lash strength and whether you prefer subtle definition or a more expressive finish.
Lash styles for hooded eyes
Hooded eyes have less visible lid space, so curl and placement become especially important. A suitable curl can help the extensions remain visible from the front, while thoughtful length placement can open the eye without overwhelming it.
Longer is not automatically better. Sometimes a slightly shorter, well-curled design creates more visible lift than excessive length.
Lash styles for downturned or upturned eyes
For downturned eyes, placing too much visual weight at the extreme outer corner can sometimes emphasise the downward direction. A lifted map with the strongest point positioned slightly inward can create a more balanced effect.
Upturned eyes already have natural lift at the outer corner. Styling can follow that shape for an elongated finish or redistribute emphasis for a softer, more rounded effect.
Where Classic, Hybrid, Wet Look, Wispy and Volume fit
Eye shape is only one part of the decision. The treatment technique determines texture and fullness. Classic lashes create individually defined, mascara-like enhancement. Hybrid combines Classic definition with soft Volume fans. Wet Look creates narrow, defined spikes. Wispy styling introduces deliberate variation in length, while Volume creates a softer, more continuous fullness.
The most flattering option is therefore a combination of technique and mapping rather than simply choosing a treatment name.
Your natural lashes set the boundaries
A beautiful lash design should also respect the condition and strength of your natural lashes. Extension length and weight need to be selected with suitability in mind. If a requested look would place unnecessary stress on the natural lashes, the design should be adjusted rather than forcing a trend.
How we choose your lash design at The Lash Lab
At The Lash Lab, new clients receive a consultation where we consider natural lash condition, facial features, lifestyle and desired outcome. The aim is not to reproduce the same map on every client, but to translate the look you love into a version that works with your own features.
Apple’s background in professional photography also influences this approach. Years spent observing faces, light, balance and composition developed an eye for proportion and detail that now informs bespoke lash and brow design.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bring an inspiration photo?
Yes. Inspiration photos are useful for understanding the finish you like. We may adapt the length, curl, density or mapping to suit your natural lashes and features.
What if I do not know my eye shape?
You do not need to. Your consultation is designed to assess your features and discuss the effect you want rather than expecting you to arrive knowing technical lash terminology.
Can I change my lash style at a refill?
Small adjustments can often be introduced gradually, although a significant change in technique or mapping may be better suited to a new full set.
Finding your look
